Wow! What an incredible book for kids, teens, AND adults。 Deeper messages about life, acceptance, and love vs。 hate are scattered throughout this fun, imaginative world。 It doesn't explicitly refer to this, but I find metaphorical overtones of accepting LGBTQ and anyone who has differences, and this book challenges gender norms as well。 A happy read that definitely sends positive vibes to the world。 Wow! If you want to be a bestselling author, be an actor…Because that’s the only way something so trite and artless gets published, let alone becomes a bestseller。 If language is a tool to be wielded, and someone like Tolstoy stands at one end of the spectrum with the sharp scalpel of a surgeon, Colfer squats at the other end as “primate with rock tries to open melon。” DNF

Brystal quickly applies for the job。 Soon, while cleaning the library, Brstal finds a secret passageway that leads to dozens of books。 Why would someone need to hide books? She discovers that the books are banned, and they are all about topics like how the justices banished the trolls because they wanted their land。 All the authors were executed, except for one。 The book is called The Truth About Magic, and obviously, it is about magic。 Brystal discovers that she is actually a fairy! In a matter of days, Brystal is sent to the Bootstrap Correctional Facility for Young Women。 The facility "cures" fairies by making them do chores like digging holes in the ground and making shoes。One day, a strange fairy named Madame Weatherberry visits the facility。 To her astonishment, Madame Weatherberry chooses Brystall for a school or fairies。 Brystal learns how to use her powers。 But in the end, how will they show the public that fairies are good? I liked this book because it had a twist at the end that I wasn't expecting。 This book is great for people who like fantasy。 。。。more

My 11 year old declared this to be "almost as good as Harry Potter", so as a huge Harry Potter fan, I saw those words as a challenge and accepted them。Whilst it was not "almost as good as Harry Potter" in my eyes, A Tale of Magic was still an interesting story。 So interesting in fact that I was left wanting more。 More detail about the lands, the characters, the conflict, the journeys。 For me, the actual detail of the story was skimped over in favour of quite a few not-so-subtle ethics and values My 11 year old declared this to be "almost as good as Harry Potter", so as a huge Harry Potter fan, I saw those words as a challenge and accepted them。Whilst it was not "almost as good as Harry Potter" in my eyes, A Tale of Magic was still an interesting story。 So interesting in fact that I was left wanting more。 More detail about the lands, the characters, the conflict, the journeys。 For me, the actual detail of the story was skimped over in favour of quite a few not-so-subtle ethics and values lessons。 Important lessons, absolutely, but I wanted to get lost in the world created by Colfer, which I just couldn't this time。 So, whilst my 11 year old gives this book 5 stars, and I give it 3, we negotiated on a healthy 4 stars。 It is a great read after all, I'm just being finicky。 。。。more

I loved Land of Stories and was super excited for this book, but it just didn’t hit the mark for me, unfortunately。 It wasn’t terrible, but I didn’t love it as much as I loved the original Land of Stories series。

A little slow to start but wow I’m blown away。 Chris Colfer is so good at pulling you into the magic that lives in his stories。 The ending had quite a twist I wasn’t expecting。 I love all the representation and feminism! Overall this book was a little heavier and darker than The Land of Stories books but it was so impactful。 Can’t wait to read the rest of the trilogy!

The characters were very flat, they hardly struggled to overcome their seemingly insurmountable challenges。 The magic system can fix anything with literally a wave of the hand I don't even understand why the people of magic were oppressed in the first place。 I mean, the main characters learned their magic within a few months and were already able to do a lot。 We don't get a glimpse into how the magic works beyond just believing and imagining things happening。 The author always "told" what was ha The characters were very flat, they hardly struggled to overcome their seemingly insurmountable challenges。 The magic system can fix anything with literally a wave of the hand I don't even understand why the people of magic were oppressed in the first place。 I mean, the main characters learned their magic within a few months and were already able to do a lot。 We don't get a glimpse into how the magic works beyond just believing and imagining things happening。 The author always "told" what was happening rather than "showed" what happened。 The main character was pulling wisdom from no where and knew exactly what her classmates were thinking and exactly how to help them。 She's 14! I hardly knew what I needed myself at that age。 Yeah, this was aimed at children but there are so many classic children's books that are so much better。 I don't know why I stuck it out to the end of the first book。 。。。more

Even this book is for young adults but the storyline is pretty convincing for me。 it is a good book to read if you are more to fantasy。 This book it's highlighted more about discrimination and politics。 there are so many things relatable to the world nowadays but the story is based on magic and etc。 The plot is clear there is no confusing or blurry part where you can understand the message they want to deliver。 the best thing about this book is it will never let your hand down from the book, tim Even this book is for young adults but the storyline is pretty convincing for me。 it is a good book to read if you are more to fantasy。 This book it's highlighted more about discrimination and politics。 there are so many things relatable to the world nowadays but the story is based on magic and etc。 The plot is clear there is no confusing or blurry part where you can understand the message they want to deliver。 the best thing about this book is it will never let your hand down from the book, time will fly very fast as you always want to know what happens next what the twist and the ending。 plus I can say there are plenty of quotes we can take out from this book especially when it comes from madam wheatherberry, she speaks the truth even all she does is lies。 It's a white lie I think wuhu。 yeah cant wait to read book 2 。。。more

2。5 stars。 If I was younger I may have enjoyed it but as an adult I found it too far fetched。 Since most of the reviews seemed to be from people who were older I thought this was one of the young adult fiction novels all ages would be able to enjoy but that wasn't the case。 I wasn't able to get into the characters at all and felt it was too rushed and it was definitely too childlike and predictable。 Still on the hunt for the Harry Potter-like series that will have me enthralled。 2。5 stars。 If I was younger I may have enjoyed it but as an adult I found it too far fetched。 Since most of the reviews seemed to be from people who were older I thought this was one of the young adult fiction novels all ages would be able to enjoy but that wasn't the case。 I wasn't able to get into the characters at all and felt it was too rushed and it was definitely too childlike and predictable。 Still on the hunt for the Harry Potter-like series that will have me enthralled。 。。。more

Simple but fun to read。 I enjoyed the story and really loved this fantasy world building。 This book is obviously a thinly veiled allegory for the LGBTQ+ community’s fight for acceptance and equality。 Props to the author for taking on this sensitive issue in a such a creative way and making it accessible for a younger audience。 As an adult reader, though, some of the moralistic parts were a little too heavy handed and distracted from my immersion into the story。Also, a heinous overuse of the word Simple but fun to read。 I enjoyed the story and really loved this fantasy world building。 This book is obviously a thinly veiled allegory for the LGBTQ+ community’s fight for acceptance and equality。 Props to the author for taking on this sensitive issue in a such a creative way and making it accessible for a younger audience。 As an adult reader, though, some of the moralistic parts were a little too heavy handed and distracted from my immersion into the story。Also, a heinous overuse of the words "suddenly," "however," and "unfortunately" had me cringing on the regular。 。。。more

I read this book in order to have a book club with my 13 year old great niece。 I was surprised at the quality of the writing。 The plot was complex and could be interpreted on more than one level。 As an adult reading this story I was constantly comparing the story line to events in our history as well as current events。 As a 13 year old my great niece enjoyed reading about the tween fairies。 It was a fun read! The descriptions were so entertaining! Try it!

I love this book。 The amount of details and writing in general is perfection。 I love the characters and how they are introduced。 I def fell in love with them all。

My goodness, this started off in such a dystopian way! Not far into the story, I was wondering why I’d bought it via Audible。 I can only think that it was recommended on Litsy or Goodreads and the magic angle is always appealing to me。Thankfully, Brystal's life changes for the better at a certain point。 And that's when things became really interesting! Made me glad that I hung on, because it was iffy for a bit。 The events of the story occurred a little too quickly for me to fully buy into, but the characters and world building had me engaged。 I realize now that from the get-go, the author wove social commentary throughout the entire story。 It got a bit preachy by the end, but I still really enjoyed the adventure and the drama。 The author read the audiobook and was great。 。。。more

It's a middle grade, so I'm not in target anymore (sigh, so more) but it was really really cute and adorable。What really hit me were the strong social issues put in this book: feminism, the fear of the different, the role of the power (i assumed the Church) that erase history and change it for its own purposes。。。 really amazing! This was a fun and fantastical read, in what turned out to be a prequel to The Land of Stories。 Did you ever wonder where fairies came from? Who trains them in magic? This book answers those questions, and more, in a story as engaging for adults as it wold be for tweens and teens。 As soon as I finished it, I picked up the next book in the series; I can only hope it will be as good。
